The global distributional range of the snow leopard spans 12 Asian countries

Snow leopards and the people of Asia’s high mountains have shared the same ground for thousands of years. The cat appears in rock art and burial sites across the region’s peaks and plateaus, from the Altai in the north to the Tien Shan in the west. On the Tibetan Plateau, the heart of the snow leopard’s range, pastoral communities have lived alongside it across generations, and that shared history still shapes the landscape today.
No species symbolises the high mountains of Asia better than the snow leopard, an apex predator, exquisitely adapted to life in cold, steep, rugged and unforgiving terrain. Despite remarkable adaptation traits, snow leopards are inherently vulnerable. The high mountain regions they inhabit are cold, arid, and biologically sparse, with short growing seasons and limited vegetation. As a result, prey populations remain low, and snow leopards occur at naturally low densities, often fewer than one animal per 100 km².
To survive in such landscapes, individuals require large home ranges. A female may range over roughly 100 km², while a male may cover more than twice that area. This means that most protected areas are simply too small to support viable snow leopard populations.
Snow leopards must live and must be protected in shared landscapes alongside people. Across their range, spanning nearly 2 million km², it is thought that there may be just about 4,000 to 6,500 snow leopards, though reliable population estimates are in the process of being generated.

A Species under Human Pressure
Biology adds certain constraints to these big cats. Snow leopards reproduce relatively slowly. Females give birth only after three or four years of age, and only once every two years. The cubs remain with their mothers for up to 20–22 months. Among all big cats, snow leopards have the lowest genetic diversity. While there is no strong evidence of harmful inbreeding or strong deleterious mutations in snow leopards, small and scattered populations remain inherently vulnerable to what is known as demographic stochasticity, chance events that can drive rapid population declines.
Their natural vulnerabilities are compounded by human pressures. For centuries, snow leopards have been killed in retaliation for livestock predation, while overgrazing by domestic animals has degraded their habitat in some places. In recent decades, they have also been drawn into the global wildlife trade. But perhaps the most profound changes accompanying the great acceleration of the Anthropocene are now being driven by large-scale development and the impacts of globalisation across their range. In China, for example, the largest snow leopard habitat, vast infrastructure projects, including roads, railways, and mining operations are transforming mountain landscapes. Similar pressures are emerging across other countries, including Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia.
Population fragmentation is becoming a serious threat to snow leopards. Their habitats often lie along international borders, and nearly a third of their range falls within 100 km of these boundaries. Increasingly, these borders are being reinforced with uncrossable fences and roads that restrict animal movement and isolate populations.
In the Tost region of Mongolia’s South Gobi province, where our team has been studying and tracking snow leopards for over two decades, young snow leopards can disperse across vast open steppe to reach neighbouring mountain ranges to the north. But to the south, a border fence with China blocks any movement, preventing genetic exchange with populations of China’s Inner Mongolia province and beyond.
Two decades ago, the entire landscape of Tost was earmarked for mining exploration. It took years of effort, local communities, working alongside our Mongolia team, secured protection for the area, leading to the creation of the Tost-Tosonbumba Nature Reserve in 2016. Covering nearly 8,000 km2, it is now co-managed by communities and authorities, and the snow leopard number has doubled.
New threats are also emerging. Plans for roads and a railway cutting through the reserve risk fragmenting this snow leopard population. If these projects move forward without adequate planning and safeguards, the social and cultural fabric of the communities who depend on this landscape will be disrupted alongside the fragmentation of wildlife populations.

The Third Pole: An Ecosystem under Stress
Snow leopards are the defining species of Asia’s great mountain systems–the Himalaya, the Pamir, the Karakoram, the Hindukush, the Tien Shan, the Altai, and the vast Tibetan plateau. They live alongside massive glaciers that hold 7,000 trillion litres of freshwater, the largest reserve of ice outside the Arctic and Antarctic. This region, aptly referred to as the water tower of Asia, is where great rivers take birth, including the Ganga, Brahmaputra, Indus, Mekong, Hwang Ho, Yangtze, Amu Darya and many others. These rivers have given rise to great ancient civilisations, and support more than two billion people today. With their unique wildlife, rich cultures, remarkable pastoral ways of life, and role as the water tower of Asia, snow leopard habitats are as important as they are unique.
But now, this region is warming at nearly twice the Northern Hemisphere average. Glaciers are retreating at alarming rates. The Gangapurna Glacier in Nepal, for instance, that used to adorn the headwaters of the Marsyangdi River, has receded by more than a kilometre within a single human lifetime, leaving behind an unstable new glacial lake. Such lakes created by retreating glaciers, are held together by weak walls of mud and rock that form the terminal moraine of the glacier. When they breach, and they breach easily, they result in devastating Glacial Lake Outburst Floods, or GLOFs as they are commonly known. In 2013, a GLOF of the Chorabari Lake in India led to the loss of nearly 6,000 human lives in the Kedarnath Valley. Such events are more frequent now.

At the same time, climate extremes are intensifying. In Mongolia, while summers may be getting warmer, severe late-winter events, known as ‘white dzud’, marked by heavy snowfall and extreme cold, are becoming more frequent. The dzud of 2024 alone killed nearly 8 million livestock, over 10% of the country’s total. In other years, prolonged droughts follow. Across the Third Pole region, communities report declining crop yields, rising livestock disease, and the potential emergence of new pathogens in a region once considered low-risk.

The path forward is clear. It requires arresting global heating. Mountain communities must be equipped with the tools to survive a changing world through enhanced climate resilience and adaptation. This means safer climate infrastructure, emergency climate funds, and nature-based income diversification that honours their culture. It means moving beyond giving these communities a role in snow leopard conservation; it means giving them the right to protect snow leopards and to benefit from their protection.
In Spiti Valley of India, our years of conservation work done in partnerships with Indigenous communities eventually led them to establish snow leopard tourism. Snow leopards are now valued as a source of income through winter tourism, a season when few other livelihood options exist. Where snow leopards were once seen as pests, the women today refer to them as their God! Indeed, the same women are putting out camera traps to monitor snow leopards and they are protecting them on their lands.
Similarly, in the snow leopard habitats in many other countries, our teams partner with Indigenous communities to assist in enhancing income diversification and livelihood security through local enterprises, insurance programs, and livestock vaccination and protection measures. During climate emergencies, they are supported through provisioning of grain, fodder, and essentials. It’s not enough and we must do more, but we have been able to garner their support for snow leopards.
Today, our partner communities themselves are protecting snow leopards in over 60,000 km² of prime habitat. In such places, coexistence is no longer an idea. It is a lived reality. And in that reality lies the hope that both people and snow leopards can endure the Anthropocene, together.
