Why it is so important to protect Mongolia's Tost Mountains from mining

Despite Studies dating back to the early 1980’s in other parts of Central Asia, snow leopards remain one of the least studies of the big cats. The Snow Leopard Trust choose the Tost-Tosonbomba Mountains to locate our first ever comprehensive research initiative due to the high density of snow leopards and the conservation importance of this site.

What we have found is that between 9 and 16 adult snow leopards and at least 6 cubs call this area home, making it one of the most productive and densely populated sites in all of the species’ 12- country range, despite the absence of a legal protected area status.

What is the ecological importance of the snow leopard?
What is the reason for the snow leopards’ decline?

Thanks again for anyone who replies. Leopard lover. xx

    1. The ecological importance of every species is based off of the nature of all systems being part of an interested cycle. That is to say every part is important for the functionality of the system as a whole. You’ll see a lot of studies done on apex predators that is because they are at the top of the food chain which means that their position is similar to ours (humans). Studying a species like the snow leopard is important because by protecting them we are protecting ourselves. That is the most basic reason and of course there are many other reasons for conservation depending on the species however all of them are important. If you’d like more information on why predatory species are an important aspect of conservation don’t hesitate to ask.

      1. And the reason for the decline is human expansion. As part of the feline family snow leopards require a lot of space that has little to no human presence. With the exponential increase in global population and the new technologies allowing for more resource extraction , takes land away from the snow leopards. The best current method is local education on the issue so that outside companies looking to take advantage of a resource can be stopped.
