The newest snow leopard to join our long-term study in Mongolia now has a new name! In February we placed a collar on a strapping young male that we were temporarily calling “M7.” As you can read in earlier posts, M7 is quite an explorer. We are proud to announce that M7 officially has a Mongolian name, “Devekh,” chosen thanks to snow leopard supporters Mark and Vickie Nysether.
The name Devekh hails from traditional Mongolian wrestling and refers to a movement that represents a falcon or phoenix taking off. Our Mongolia Country Director, Bayara, says “Devekh” is a unique, active name. And seeing how snow leopard Devekh has been traveling so much, it seems quite fitting!
Devekh is quite a looker!
He’s handsome! I love the name.
Beautiful…….so majestic and sacred…. wishing him a prosperous life that is long lived.
