All Ears for Adaptation: A lesson in ear design

Grade level: 1-6

Subjects: Science and Communication

Time: 15 – 25 minutes

Overview:
This mini-lesson gives students a “hand-on” chance to experience how animals’ ears have evolved to maximize sound and identify direction of sounds and thus enhance survival. Students work in pairs in a simple experiment that requires no materials. This mini-lesson is a powerful and engaging way to illustrate adaptation and evolution.

Hey – this doesn’t require any materials, what do you have to lose?

Prey and Predator: A lesson on Interaction

Grade level: 1-8

Subjects: Science/Communications

Time: 40– 45 minutes

Overview:
This participatory lesson gives students the opportunity to experience the prey-predator relationship. It makes salient some of the skills a predator must practice in order to catch prey, and the skills necessary for prey to elude predators. Prey and Predator Lesson Plan

Resources, Consumers and Predators: A lesson on Balance

Grade level: 6 and above

Subjects:
Biology, ecology, mathematics (using graphs)

Time:
45 mins to 1 hour, with opportunity for written follow up.

Group size:
Up to 25 active participants at one time. May rotate to include up to 40

Goal:
To demonstrate the role of predators in controlling ungulate populations

Key words:
Eco-system, resources, fluctuate, population crash, predator, prey

Overview:
This is a fun game-style activity about the relationship between a population and available resources. Ibex compete for a limited number of resources and biologists monitor the ibex population as it fluctuates. The activity shows how the presence of snow leopards in the ecosystem dampens extreme population fluctuations. We have played this game in Pakistan, India and Kyrgystan, and each time it has been very stimulating!

Requirements:
Open space with enough room for 2 lines of 8 students to stand about 8 meters opposite each other; a white or black board, and we provide the rest.
