Rugged mountainous landscapes are not only beautiful, they also serve as homes to snow leopards, as well as many different people and species of wildlife. Unfortunately, mountains and their ecosystems are also facing serious threats as a direct result from deforestation, mining, climate change, and encroachment.

The world's mountains are a reservoir of drinking water for 50% of the world. Worldwide, agriculture accounts for more than 70 % of freshwater consumption, mainly for irrigation of agricultural crops. In Africa and Asia, agriculture accounts for nearly 80 %. It is important that we do what we can in order to conserve our freshwater supply. Snow leopards are a keystone species. A keystone species has a relatively low population but plays a critical role in maintaining its mountain ecosystem—the same way an arch has only one keystone, but will collapse if the keystone is remove. If snow leopards were to disappear, the mountain ecosystems where they had lived will have very serious problems. For example, there will be no natural check on wild goat populations, and too many goats can lead to overgrazing which destroys mountain pastures and leads to erosion.
